ALLOWS LEACH TO DEAD HEAT

Wild scenes marked the end of the "all-in" wrestling contest be- tween Ben Sherman (Canada) and Henry Iralinger (United States), following the disqualification of the American in the fourth round.

Rain fell throughout the tourna- on ment-an open-air event making conditions most difficult for thel grapplers.

The men were wrestling on the ropes in about the middle of the fourth round when Sherman's head became caught between the upper and middle strande. Iralinger in mediately grabbed the Canadian's head and proceeded to bend it, us- ing the ropes as a fulcrum. There Sherman struggled all trussed up with his head, as it were, in a hangman's noose..

Iralinger's own second was the first to realise the danger of strangulation to Sherman, and him! rushed) · round to free

Irslinger warded him off with a wild swing and continued to work on the helpless Sherman's head.

FULL BLUE AWARDED FOR A WIN

HALLOWELL SHATTERS 30 YEARS OLD HALF MILE RECORD

London, Mar. 12.

Oxford won the University Sports at the White City Stadium Saturday by 7 events to 4 achieving exactly what was expect- ed of them.

Only one new record was set up, N. P. Hallowell, Oxford's huge striding American Olympic finalist, running the half-mile 1min. 54 1-5sec, as against K. Cornwallis's Imin, 54 4-5sec. thirty years ago.

still time for J. E. Lovelock (Oxford) to beat his own world's “At the end of the third quarter of the Mile race, there was record of 4min. 6 3-58cc., and many spectators were puzzled as to the reason why he so obviously allowed A. B. Leach to make a dead heat of it. Those who had seen J. G. Cornes make the same kindly concession to Lovelock himself two years ago realised why. The second and third strings in the Mile get only a Half Blue, the Full Blue being awarded for a win. A dead-heat, however, count as a win, so A. B. Leach got the much-desired reward.

The outstanding feat of the day, was the remarkable per- formance of C. F. Stanwood (Oxford) in claiming three events for the second year in succession. He gained an ear- ly victory in the 120. yards hurdles, won the high jump, and then raced across the arena for the 220 yards hurdles event which he won comfort- ably',
