French Uneasy After Chain of Disasters
TAVISKY ON DEATH BED
PREMIER CHAUTEMPS ExUARD Diabad
WHERE 200 DIED
82 LAGNY
With the Parisian press openly alluding to it as a "rotten regime," the government of Premier Camille Chautemps is in the toughest spot of its career. The present storm of criticism is cutgrowth of a chain of disasters, most recent of which was the train wreck which cost 200 liven at Lagny and for which the govern ment failed to fix responsibility. Then came the Stavisky affair, wheroin Alexander Stavisky, Russian swindler, well known to police and the pal of government officials, was able to defraud the pubile of more than $30,000,000 la forged bonda. Police say he committed suicide. Critica say he was murdered to "close his mouth. On top of that comes the report that defective material and workmanship were used in the $100.000.- 000 chain of forta along the Franco-German frontier. Minister of War Edouard Daladier took prompt steps to squelch the gumor, but it persists, and observers say a first-class scandal is brewing.
