What Chance

The one point I want to make is that Richards has so far a percentage well in ad- vance of anything previously.

I have been wont to think that! since the war the porcentages of the leading jockeys have been rather poor. Richards only just beat 20 last year. In 1931 his per-i centage was 16.20 and in the pre-| At the end of, vious year 15.34. last week his percentage was 27.37. Bo it will be seen he has made a big jump. No jockey with an aver age 'number of mounts among pre- sent-day jockeys has ever had a percentage as good as that of Richards this season. The bezt best is that of Carslake with 19.85.

Limited Opportunities Carsiake cannot go to scale al 2. less than about 8st. 4lb. His op- portunities are, therefore, rather). limited. Yet he is the only jockey whose mounts have shown a profit over a number of years. I reinem. ber that, before he retired, he was the only one of the show a profit on a level stake. He has done just as well since his return, and the mb ment he and Harry Wragg are the only one on the right side of the balance-sheet. It may have been all right in Archer's time, but in these days it is a foolish proceed. ing to follow any jockey blindly.

TIMES MENTIONED ARE ABSOLUTELY AUTHENTIC, AND WERE TAKEN DURING THE MORNING TRYOUTS."

There is a report to the effect that Racing Heart, an Australian belonging to Mrs. S. W. Tang, did a mile-and-a-half in 3 minutes. This gallop, if it has been correctly timed, is by far the best gallop of the season, but as I unfortunately did not see it, I cannot vouch for it.

Mr. Dunbar's Chief Seattle impressed me very much with a mile-and-a-half-gallop last week when he covered the last quarter in under 30 seconds. This pony is a real beauty and finishes all his gallops in convincing style. So far he has shown himself up in a good light, and I am inclined to think he will be the first string PRINCESS HALL WHO among the "Dunbar" griffins this year, though I would not like to say

DINTY DOING WELL, AFTER BAD COLD

Unlikely Starter Next Month

Mrs. Stanton's Dinty, spoken of as the best Australian among the new batch, has made a good, re- covery, from his bad cold, but it is considered improbable that the pony will start at the An- nual Meeting

It is indeed unfortunate us Dinty was almost certain to have won 'one race at least. He is, however, good enough to pick up many prizes during the Extra Meetings.
