ALEXANDER TROYANOVÉKY.
Like many others who now bold Important posts in the New Russia, Alexander Antonovich Troyanovsky, appointed as first Soviet Ambas sador to the United States, suffered the lash of persecution during the Cxarist regims. Joining the revolutionary movement when a graduate of 20, Troyanovsky was bounded by the secret police until he was caught and sent to Biberia. He escaped after a year in the frozen wilderne and took refuge in France until the revolution of 1917, when he returned to Husala and fought in the revolutionary army. Since then he has held many important posts in the Soviet government, principal among them being that of Soviet Ambassador to Tokio, during the period when Japan was invading Manchuria and Chine. Choice of Opening Bid
Ja most hands, the opener hai generally a choice between some ault which could be bid as trump
or of a no-trump bid.
The two principles in the proach systems are:

1. That whenever a hand tains any kind of biddable suit (even a shaded four-card minor) this suit should, as a rule, be pre- ferred to a no-trump in opening the bidding..
2 That responding hand should not only prefer a suit. response |(even a four-card shaded biddable suit), but should, whenever pos sible, endeavour to keep his re- sponses within the range of "one" bide.
The above rules
are very im 'portant and are actually the base of the approach system. Failure to follow them will crowd the bid- ding, so that much valuable part- nership information will be lost.
An opening bid of "One" or # response of "One" are ideal bids. In Contract. Only in cases when the trump suit is solid (when * pre-emptive bid is made), or when the hand is so powerful that a spa- eial bid must be made in order to assure a response from partner. are higher bids resorted to.
