Pitfalls of Weak Original Bids

BY FRANK ENGLAND

THE CHINA MAIL.

A correspondent writes cóm- plaining that twice recently an original bid of One of a suit doubl. ed informatorily and left in business has resulted disastrously for the declarer. In the one ca vulnerable 1400 points down. In the other non-vulnerable 700.

"The original bid," he goes on to say, "in both cases was perfectly sound-a four-sult headed by Ace, King and an outside Ace." He suggests that the original bidder should switch to the No Trump in the fond hope that this, at any rate, will not be doubled.

My criticism of this is that any good player whose double of One of a suit has been left in by part- ner is certain also to double the One No Trump. No! My sugges- tion is the name as that of Mr. Punch to those about to marry: Don't bid on such a hand! Pre- vention is better than cure. What! you will exclaim, not open on three quick tricks?
