MR. LEO FROST'S DRAMATIC COMEBACK WINS CHAMPIONSHIP

MR. "JOHNNY" HEARD

BEATEN ON POST CHAMPION'S FIVE WINS AFTER INFLUENZA

MR. INGRAM'S FINE RIDE ON CITY OF MELBOURNE PAYS $182.10

(By Rapier)

bed on Friday with an attack of influenza Mr. "Leo" Frost, champion jockey, made such a remarkable recovery that yesterday he rode five winners at the Valley to beat Mr. "Johnny" Heard's record of 23 wins to win the jockey's championship for the first half of the season.

Mr. Frost rode as one inspired to record five wins, a second, and a third in ten starts. Mr. Heard secured three thirds in seven starts.

In a day of surprises Mr. J. C. A. Ingram had the distinction of returning the highest dividend when he rode City of Melbourne into second place to pay $182.10. Mr. S. Y. Liang paid a win divi- dend of $128.80 on Partnership, and The Panther (Mr. Frost) was responsible for $73 and Ngtuk (Mr. Sewell) $69.70.

All the favourites City of Brisbane (Mr. Frost), What's That (Mr. Heard) and Wotla (Mr. Butler) were nowhere in the field.

City of Melbourne, within an ace of recording a sensational triumph, ran beautifully. There were only 17 tickets out of 2585 on him for a win Cossack's Choice (Mr. Fung) provided the third surprise, com- ing in third to pay $17.80.

This was City of Brisbane's first “also ran" in six starts,

Mr. Frost's Fourth Wm. After giving trouble at the start of the second Tytam Handicap "B Class Victor (Mr. Soares) led the field of six starters until the back straight was reached when Mr. Prost brought Disorderly Conduct through to record his fourth win of the afternoon.

A great finish was witnesed between Bold General (Mr. Botelho) and Disorderly Con- duct, only superior jockeyship securing the verdict by a short head. Victor was blocked in

Aden, second favourite, again disappointed as did Funny Face which ran well up to the Rock and then faded right out of the ple-

ture.

Champion Jockey Wins.

The Bohea Plate witnessed only two starters from the five entries, Mr. Frost on Cyclamen Bay getting away to a good start and leading Mr. Harriman on Sadko right round the track to win by 1% lengths.

The champion jockey set a hot pace at the start and led by six lengths at the football slands. Mr. Harriman, how- ever, would not bite and allow- el Sadko to run his own race, though he began to push him at the Rock where he gained rapidly on the Dunbar crack. Cyclamen Bay, however, came again beautifully in the last quarter to stave off Sadko's challenge.

Sadko was the better of the two' ponies and had Mr. Harriman rid- den him harder in the home straight he might have won.
