GILBERT HAS EYE ON KENTUCKY DERBY

Miami, Fla., March 1, Johnny Gilbert, modest Syrian youth who scored 212 wiza last year as a jockey, goes. quietly about the Hialeah Park track here.. and thinks about the coming Ken-

He has visions of-riding a win--- ner--perhaps a son of the mighty Man O' War-in that famous classic
next May.
His hopes are pinned to the fact that Samuel Riddle -purchas ed his contract last fall and that in the Riddle stable are two pro- mising Co
colts-War Glory and War Stripes that are eligible for the Churchill Downs mile-and-a-quar- ter classic. War Glory, Gilbert says, is the more likely candidate. "Let me have a horse with ́a chance," he said, “and I'll be in the thick of the battle."
Thoroughbred Race Horse Breeding
Three American States Valued At $51,582,500
(By BRYAN FIELD.)"
~HE breeding industry, which in three States involves a valuation THE
of $51,582,500 in farms and horseflesh, has grown to such an extent that the United States now is the largest producer of thor- oughbreds in the world, according to Jockey Club statistics made public by George H. Ball, president of the Saratoga Association for the Improvement of the Breed of Horses,
The three States are Kentucky, Virginia and Maryland--the three great nursery centres of the Union-but Mr. Bull points out that of the extraordinary total devoted to the thoroughbred in those sections $14,785,000 may be credited to New Yorkers.
Upward of 5,000 foals were registered in the Stud Book in 1932, giving this country a substantial lead over the combined re- gistrations of Great Britain and Ireland. Latest official figures avail- ~ able for the purpose of comparison show the United States first with 4,495 foals registered, Great Britain and Ireland second with 3,831, France third with 2,894 and Germany fourth with 1,038.
