Aberdeen Water Supply, Stage I

336. One half of a 5-million-gallon service reservoir to supply the increasing demand at Aberdeen and Ap Lei Chau was completed on a site adjacent to the existing slow sand filters. A contract was let for the construction of a new 6-million-gallon per day rapid gravity filter station for which the first units of plant were received from the United Kingdom. Design work was completed for the construction of a new block of quarters for the filter station staff.

Western New Territories Supply, Stage II

337. All trunk mains from Tai Lam Chung and distribution mains to Yuen Long were completed, and with the completion of the quarters and pump house at Lam Tei, it was possible to provide a supplementary raw water supply to the Yuen Long area.

338. Work on the design of the filters, clarifloculator and service reservoir proceeded slowly due to limited staff.

Shek Pik Scheme

339. This scheme is for the construction of a 5,400-million-gallon reservoir involving the main dam, diversion tunnel, catchwaters, supply tunnels and pipes, including eight miles of twin 30" diameter undersea pipeline. Filters and service reservoirs are included making the scheme self-contained. It is scheduled for completion by the end of 1963.

340. Work proceeded satisfactorily on the concrete piling, formation of a temporary embankment and the grouting of the foundations; a contract was let for the construction of the main earth-filled dam and work was started on the diversion tunnel.

341. Contracts were also let for the main supply tunnels from Shek Pik to Pui O, the catchwater access road, two sections of catchwater and the supply of the underwater pipelines to Hong Kong. Minor irrigation work was put in hand well before construction of catchwaters will be started in order to overcome local objections.

342. Excavation work began on the main 30-million-gallon reception reservoir at Mount Davis, and the access road to the pumping station and balance tank at Sandy Bay.
