of the Police the section installed a large number of safety devices such as pedestrian guard rails and crossings and other traffic aids such as carriage lane markings and improved traffic signs for all purposes.
286. Beam type wheel guide railings were installed for the first time on dangerous bends in the New Territories. Overhead traffic signs were introduced in Murray Road, Garden Road and Queen's Road East.
STREET LIGHTING
287. The improvement of public street lighting continued with the installation of nearly 1,000 new lamps, and the replacement of gas lamps and low-powered electric lamps.
288. For the first time public street lighting was installed on the islands of Lantao and Peng Chau.
289. Over 300 illuminated traffic aids and pier lights were installed throughout the Colony.
QUARRIES
290. The two quarries operated by the Roads Office with direct labour produced almost 225,000 tons of stone of which over 95,000 tons were used for premix bituminous macadam. Reduced demands for crushed stone on Hong Kong Island from July to October were reflected in the smaller output from the Mount Butler Quarry. The production of bituminous macadam, however, increased by 17%.
291. A new mixing plant at Hok Yuen was completed and brought into operation in December. This plant has proved most satisfactory.
292. The following table shows the output of the quarries over the last three years:

294. As from August the Quarry Section took over the control of the use of explosives by private users in the Colony.
295. At the end of the year a Barber Greene asphalt spreader for road surfacing was brought into use. First results were satisfactory.
296. Many dangerous boulders were removed by the quarry staff without untoward incident.
