Clock Mystery, th

In 1908 there suddenly grew, up the remarkable mystery of a clock. Dr. Henderson had sent a gift clock to Mr. Shaw. The clock got lost and led to a hundred speculations on its whereabouts.

... My wife (wrote the hus- band) vehemently contradicts your repeated assertions that you have sent her a clock. Nothing of the kind has arrived. Where is that clock? wo tell the time from mere Idle assertions in your letters? There is no clock, Who did you really send it to? Is it striking its life away in some absurd American luggage office, or is it at the bottom of the Atlantic! What sort of a clock) was It? Was it a grandfather's clock? Or a travelling clock, or a kitchen clock, or a little circulari alarm clock?

If we cannot have the real thing you might at least let us) have a description. We have imaginations; and if you lay it on thickly enough, you can make ys, as happy as if the actual plece of machinery had turned up.

But the clock did not turn up.) And rather than leave the Shaws still wondering Dr. Henderson sent them another one, exactly like it.

Apparently you have never met a philanderer, because you dismiss the phenomenon with the words cad and scoundrel; which are the confessions of critical bankruptcy, denoting merely persons that you don't like and don't understand. You had better ask Mrs. Hender- aon about it. She, being a very pretty lady, han probably come. across this puzzling type of man who is irresistibly attracted by womanhood and beauty, and uses every art to make himself loved, and yet at the last moment re- coils terror-stricken, and uses every art to extricate himself... It is all very well for you to re- proach me with my endless delays; but what about that Clock?
