BRIDGES

278. Works included a 137-foot bridge at Beas River and a 69-foot bridge at Dodwell's Ridge. These two reinforced concrete bridges are trestle supported, 48 feet wide and accommodate 24-foot carriageways and footpaths.

279. A large reinforced concrete arch culvert with a span of 23 feet and a rise of 14 feet was almost completed on a realigned stretch of the Tai Po Road at the 14 mile stone. This has the object of eliminating a dangerous hairpin bend over an old bridge, the cause of many accidents. Work also commenced on two reinforced concrete bridges at Sham Tseng on the Castle Peak Road. These are 55 feet and 94 feet long respectively and are being provided as part of a scheme for dual carriageways. All these bridges were designed to Ministry of Transport loading requirements.

280. In order to improve footpath communications in outlying districts of the New Territories two long-span reinforced concrete foot-bridges were erected at Kau Choi Tam, and work also started on three more footbridges in the remote villages of To Yuen Tung, Pak Yui and Wang Chau.

281. A steel footbridge was fabricated for erection in Wylie Road. When completed it should do much to improve traffic flow by taking pedestrians off this busy highway.

TRAFFIC ENGINEERING

282. The section produced tentative schemes for the future routing of traffic in the central area of Victoria. These were prepared to meet a variety of demands which will arise from the extension of Connaught Road through the dockyard to Wan Chai, the development of new lands in the Central reclamation, the redevelopment of released naval and military land and last but not least to meet the requirements of the large increases in traffic.

283. Numerous studies were made of the traffic flow at junctions and road networks as an essential preliminary to the production of junction improvement plans and street widening proposals.

284. A large number of Town Planning proposals were studied and appropriate advice given in regard to such matters as the location and layout of road junctions, sight lines at intersections and widths of roads.

285. Close co-operation was maintained with the Police Traffic Office in matters pertaining to all road improvements. At the request
