IN SPITE OF THE POOR VISIBILITY, WHICH LIMITED HIS VIEW TO A FEW HUNDRED YARDS. AND THE BY NO MEANS PERFECT CONDITION OF BEACH, SIR MALCOLM CAMPBELL YESTERDAY EXCEEDED HIS OWN LAND SPEED: RECORD OF 254 MILES PER HOUR, BY OVER 18 MILES.
Conditions were so bad at the mid-day hour announced for the trial that he thought it would be impossible to break the re- cord, but undertook the attempt in order not to disappoint the 50,000 people who were present to see him drive his car, "Bluc Bird," as fast as he dared.
After waiting an hour, the low lying mists obscuring the course became thinner and Sir Malcolm Campbell made the run southward at a recorded speed of 273.556 miles per hour. He changed the tyres and made the northward run at 270.676 miles per hour, thus setting up a new world record of 272.108 miles per hour.
