Some time ago an order for a boat of this class was placed here with the South China Motor Ship Bull; ding and Repairing Works, whilst the machinery contract was award- ed to Brittal firms.

The new boat is for the Star Ferry Co. the service being at pre- sent wholly maintained by steamers. Although intended mainly for the transport of passengers, a certain amount of freight will be carried.

The engine in question is an eight- cylinder Crossley Premier four-cycle vis-a-vis model designed to develop 600 b.h.p. at 270 r.p.m., but capable! of inaintaining an output of 575 b.h.p. at a speed of approximately 300 r.p.m.

800-kw. The engine drives a B.T.H. dynamo, and current is de livered to two 870 b.h.p. electric motors. Only one of these is in service at a time, dependent upon the direction in which the ship is proceeding. Control is wholly effected from the bridge and is on the special system developed by the B.T.H. Overloads on the generator. or motors are prevented in this syn-' tem by a power-limiting arrange- ment. Direct-current machinery is adopted. It will be observed that the two electric motors are installed In the engine-room; so that they are under the immediate supervision of the engineer in charge,

The new ferry will be practically similar in main characteristics to the steamers now in service. These will have to be replaced by new ships in due course, and it is na- turally believed that, should' the Diesel electric system prove suc- cessful in every respect, of which there seems to be little doubt, it will be used in any further tonnage which may be ordered.
