The Governor-in-Council on January 19 reconsidered the sentence of death passed on Cheng Kwok-yan and has decided to exercise leniency. The sentence will be com muted to life imprisonment. The first petition signed by 230 prominent Chinese residents was considered by the Governor in Council on January 12, when it was decided to let the law take its course.
