suffering from blood poisoning and had to go with them. This left three of us.
We were entirely dependent for water on the unnamed tributary of the Tapirape, which ran parallel to our course but was always separat ed from us by a thick belt of jungle. We were all three carrying as much as we could manage, and it took us on an average about two hours to cut our way through the jungle from the campo to the river and vice versa. Once outalde we could make good going. But we could never be certain how far inalde the screen of Jungle on our left hand the river lay, or indeed if it was there at all.
After three more days (on one of which we played for safety and waded all day up the river bed) we had to turn back. Our supplies were down to one-tin of Quaker Oats; and we had only a ride in bad repair to supplement them with.
