even agree that they might have: beaten us in that match at Stam- ford Bridge. They nearly did. They only lost by the odd goal in seven. But if we were to play them again next week I should back England. If we play- ed them once a wook for three months my considered opinion is that we should be beating them fairly easily at the finish.

First, because a line of forwards who could find each other, vary. their attack, and shoot straight would walk through their on-the retreat defence; secondly, because, brilliant as it was, I saw no signa of an alternative if their one-way attack had broken down-as it might easily do against half-backs who stopped it at the start. And, their finishing was miles below the rest of their work in attack. All these factors are essential to the really great Soccer team.

Some time before the match had Anished I found myself able to forecast, in my own mind, precise- ly what the Austrians would do cach time they got the ball. And I believe the English halves-over whom I as an observer, had a con- siderable advantage in that respect

The technique of the Austrians was different from anything we had been led to expect. - Their con- trol over a football was almost uncanny, writes Roland Allen in The Evening Standard. To assert that · Eriglish football | was shown up in this match in so much nonsense. Just as silly as the label "wonder team" which had been applied to the Austrians, They have a long way to go before I should call them that.

There is every possibility of Australia being set well over 400 runs in the fourth innings, a feat I consider beyond her, especially as Oldfield is hors de combat.
