Government buildings, alterations and additions to, and the maintenance of, existing Government buildings, and the supervision of construction and maintenance of private schools receiving Government grants-in-aid. Together with P.W.D. Headquarters the office acts as the liaison with private architects commissioned to carry out new building works for Government.
23. Expenditure on new works amounted approximately to $77,700,000, of which $63,400,000 was expended by the Architectural Office including $27,600,000 on Resettlement Estates, while $14,300,000 was spent on Government buildings for which the services of private architects had been commissioned. In addition $6,000,000 approximately, was spent by the Architectural Office on maintenance, alteration, and additions to existing buildings, and a further expenditure of $1,500,000 was incurred on account of storm damage.
Schools
EDUCATIONAL BUILDINGS
24. Construction of standard Government primary schools continued and six twenty-four-classroom schools, each for 1,080 children in one session, were completed at Li Cheng Uk, Shek Kip Mei, Wong Tai Sin, Sycamore Street, Ngau Tau Kok and Tong Mi Road.
25. Working drawings have now been completed for standard thirty-classroom primary schools; construction started on the first of these at Lo Fu Ngam, while site formation and piling is in hand for two more at Chai Wan and Tsuen Wan.
26. The thirty-classroom schools can be accommodated on sites of about 22,000 square feet and each provides places for 1,350 children in one session. The classrooms, together with three practical rooms, offices, staff rooms, etc., are accommodated on five upper floors, with a covered assembly and play space at ground floor level, together with an open P.T. and basket-ball court. Additional play space is provided on the flat roofs.
27. Additional classrooms and laboratories were completed at King's College; working drawings are in hand for a twenty-four-classroom Junior Secondary School for boys at Fuk Wa Street; and sketch plans for additions to Tsuen Wan Primary School were completed.
