Miss Fisk waited for no more, but turned about and went away from that place at speed. She was more than, glad to gain the sane- tuary of her sitting-room, for she had never been called a nosy old 5th Dec beldame before." As she aank gratefully into her chair, she glanc- ed mechanically across at Number Thirty-four, and noted two things -the absence of the lay-figure from its accustomed corner and the presence of Mrs. Morris, very much alive, very sullen of coun- tenance, wearing a bandage about her throat, and laying the table 11th Dec. for supper. Miss Fisk reddened, frowned, and for the first time in her life turned her back to the window, It was still so turned when, Iater, Mr. Morris. came trundling his barrow home up the street. Therefore, she did not see the offensive glare which he bes- towed upon her window. But she felt it.
