Here comes a young Japanese student of 21, passing through the streets of Kobe with a bundle of bedding on his back. He stops at "the door of a wretched hovel, six' feet by six. Surely he will not go in there! The floor has not been swept for months, it is alive with vermin, and its history is terrible. even for a neighbourhood such as this.
