The 20,000-ton Cosulich liner was, recently completed, and she will shortly sail on her maiden voyage to South America. She represents a new conception, for she is, perhaps, the first cabin ship of her type to be built for South American ser-Fat, vices. This growing adoption of

Sun. the so-called cabin class of ship is It more than a sign of the times.

Mon. 31 is a definite tendency, and it is now quite clear that when passenger Tues. liners are under consideration in the

Wed future, the owners will have to give more thought to the type of vessel Thurs, 3. they are to build, from the stand- point of passenger accommodation, Fri. than they have ever done before. states the Motor Ship.

There is a danger that the cabin class ship will gradually develop so that the comfort of the accommoda- tion in the cabin class will become so great that she is nothing less. than a luxury ship, in which first class is called cabin class, and second-class tourist class. This is undesirable, but, at any rate, it has been shown that these fine cabin-class ships are able to offer accommodation at so much lower prices than the faster luxury vessels, that they can run at a profit even in these times.

new

It may be, on the other hand, that there will be an even further sim- plification of schemes of decoration, and ships will be built in which what are now termed the cabin pas- sengers and the tourist third pas sengers will use the same public - rooms, and that the difference in the accommodation will lie wholly in the sleeping cabins. There would then be only one further class, namely, the third class, as ordinary provided in a cabin-class ship.

The need for luxury ships will always remain, and in these the decoration will naturally be the best that can possibly be attained, whilat speed will be a factor of vital ins portance. But no doubt their num- ber, relatively, will diminish, and the simpler classes of passenger. liner will come more and more in demand, at any rate until the world has passed through another stage of evolution. While in this connec tion we are aware that the question; of methods of propulsion scarcely seem to arise, we cannot avoid the conclusion that, with any prospect of future liner construction, no matter of what class, the installa- tion of oil engines must be con- sidered more than ever.

A WHOLE WEEK'S NEWSPAPERS IN ONE.

An ́11-year-old boy, Chau Kwok-ming, son of Dr. Chau,

7, Lincoln Road, Kowloon Tong, was fatally injured on the afternoon of October 23 when struck on the head' by a fall- " ing boulder on the steep ascent of Beacon Hill.

The Ive companions of the dead boy came back from the hills on October 24, a police rescue party bearing with them the body of their young companion.

Police tell of the desperate efforts of the hikers to get aid for their injured friend during the night, of how one of their number made his way to Sham Shui Po police station and led a party of officers back into the hills in an attempt» to find his companions. They hunted throughout the night without, avail. ~ A full story of the tragedy is given in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.

The failure of the favourites in the Queensland Handi- cap for Australian "ponies, was the greatest surprise feature of the race meeting held at the Valley on October 22. Evening Star, ridden by Mr. S. N. Pan, started one of the hottest favourites of the day, and was forced into third place by two very mediocre mounts ridden by Messrs. A. W. da Roza and Y. T. Fung.

Deputising for Gleneagles, Mr. L. Dunbar's Liberty Bay, making its first appearance since winning the Hong 'Kong Derby, made a splendid showing in the Sixth Aggre- gate Stakes, beating Sadko by two and a half lengths. Mr. J. Reidy's Bag and Baggage, who has been one of the most conspicuous ponies in important races this season cracked up badly and finished last in a field of four.

The meeting is fully reported in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.NE

-

Within a very brief space of time on October 20, the Legislative Council completed an agenda which included items of business which will make history in the Colony. In the first place the Council gave first reading to the "Ordinance to secure increased trade between the Colony and the Empire." Thus Hong Kong takes its part in the Imperial Preference. Plan, conceived at Ottawa, and in which every portion of the Empire takes some part.

"This Bill," said Hon. Mr. C G. Alabaster, K.C., Attorney-General, "arises out of the recent Imperial Con- ference at Ottawa."

It passed first reading without discussion.

The preferential tariff ordinance imposes a duty of 25" per cent, on all foreign-made automobiles or motor vehicles registered in the Colony.

The proceedings are reported in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.

"':

Warder Maurice Friend, 36, attached to the Lai Chi Kok Prison, was found dead at 6.30 o'clock on October 24, with a bullet wound through his head, outside the Single Men's Quarters, Lai Chi Kok. Suicide is suspected. Warder Friend was found by the officers lying outside the bathroom door. He was dressed in white shirt and wilte shorts and there was a bullet wound in the right temple. The body was removed to the Kowloon Public Mortuary,

A story is given in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL. The victorious Interport Tawn Bowls team, were feted on October 14, at a dinner given by the Hong Kong Lawn Bowls Association. The guests of the evening were Messrs. B.W. Bradbury, A D. Brawn, J. C, Brown, G. L. Buchanan, H. Hampton. R. S. Nichol and U. M. Omar. "Our Interport Bowlers." was given by Mr. A. L. Shields, vice president, who said he esteemed it a great honour to be in the chair and to express congratulations to their President and the Hong Kong Interport Lawn Bowls team: on their victory in Shanghai Lawn Bowlers he ventured to state were mostly modest men who played the game for the game's sake.
