WHOLE WEEK'S NEWSPAPERS IN ONE.

One of the most sensational murder trials In the his- tory of the Colony came to an end in the Criminal Sessions of the Supreme Court on the morning of August 24, when Cheng Kwok-yan, the son of a wealthy Ipoh (FMS) family was found guilty by a special jury, on a charge of procuring the murder of Fung Him alias George Fung The Jury deliberated-for 35 minutes and returned their which was received with great excitement at 11.25 The Judge (Sjr. Joseph Kemp, KC.) in his sum spoke for nearly half-an-hour. He touched "on briefly and directed the Jury that they could not chance with the prisoner. Suspicion or even grave sus- picion was not enough to convict.

When the Court assembled that morning, Mr. Eldon Pofter, KC leading counsel for the defence, continued his eloquent address, which he had commenced on the previous morning, after a dramatic speech by Mr. H. G. Sheldon, on behalf of the Crown. Regarding the evidence of Zimmern and Christie, Mr. Sheldon said he submitted with some con- fidence that their stories were not shaken one lota under cross-examination. Mr. Potter, on the other hand, termed the witnesses as deliberate perjurers, who had lied to save their own necks, in order to secure a conviction against the accused.

Mr. Potter disagreed with the free pardon practice which had been introduced by the Crown to Zimmern, Christle and Tsui-Yum-sham, and regarded it as a He urged the Jury to disbelieve the defence's story accused, he stated, had sent for Zimmern and Christie from. Canton, to prove an alibi. And they did prove it.

It was a crowded Court, the majority of whom were ladies, that listened with intense silence to the verdict be ing pronounced by the Fo man (Mr. G. S. Archbutt). At Conce, Mr. Potter
