Vickers Armstrong's are now manufacturing at Elswick, «New- castle-on-Tyne, steel gas containers of a special type for use on lorries and vehicles, which it is claimed will run entirely on ordinary coal- gas, dispensing with the use of petrol This, it is said, will effect an economy on petrol fuel costs of between 30 and 40 per cent., 'and so provide a further stimulus to the coal trade.
Outlining the project recently," Gommander E. R. Micklen, RN, of Vickers Armstrong's, Elswick ob- served that for some time the firm had been manufacturing high ten- sile alloy steel bottles suitable for the storage of gas high pressures approximately up to 3,000 lbs. per square inch.
"The compressed coal-gas con- tainers," he said, "are, fixed under the Forry and connected straight through to the engine cylinders. Recent experiments have proved that under certain conditions ordinary coal-gas can be used for running heavy motor vehicles with a. definite advantage, as compared with petrol."
It was stated at the recent an- bal meeting of the National Coun- cil of American Shipbuilders by Mr. H. G. Smith, the president, that at the beginning of this year Unit- ed States shipyards were working at about 45 per cent, of their total capacity.

Letters for this route should be marked "Saigon-Marseilles Air Service" and handed in at the G.P.O. or Kowloon Post Ofce.
Mails can now be forwarded to Europe via Siberia.
Letters and postcards for Europe and South America are forward- ed "via Siberia” if so superscribed.
