NEW YORK-FAR EAST SERVICE.
Japan Involved In Competition.
FIVE CONCERNS OPERATE.
t
Tokyo, July 9.
Competition on the New York trade line is becoming very acute. The Mitsul Shipping Department and the Kawasaki, Shipping Com- pany have now started to operate on the route. At present the Osaka Shoeen Kalsha enjoys an enviable position, but the parti- cipation of the above two operators will be a gorious blow,
Japanese tramps in the Pacific have been experiencing conalder- able difficulties on account of the poor cargo movement. The lum- ber rate, for instance, is unpre- cedently low at $3.25 which means a loas even to an economical motor ship. These tramps are therefore obliged to move to other markete, jand the New York line is consider-
ed one of the most suitable.
On the New York-Far East ex-
press service, the 0.5.K. at present operates six Diesel boats, and will have two more at the end of the year. The Mitsui Shipping De- the Shigisan Maru and is shortly assigning the Akagisan Maru to ply between New York and the For East. The Mitsui Shipping De- has the advantage of partment Mitsu! Bussan Kaisha.
New Monthly Service. The Kawasaki Kissen Kaisha haa
now decided to operate a monthly service with four vessels.
The
Ryoyo Maru, the Cuba Maru, the Soyo Maru and the Florida Maru. The Ryoyo Maru left Kobe for New York on June 30. The Kokusai Kisen Kaisha at present operates three motor ships and will shortly have two new vessels.
There are thus five Japanese shipping concerns operating the New York line.
Although large tramp owners are making desperate efforts to dis- tribute their vessels in ocean "ser- vices, small operators are obliged fleet to coastwise to assign their services. The Kobe Shipping Ex- change announces that the total tonnage distribution in cosstwise Bervice is now. 1,650,000 tons. Unable to obtain suitable charters for cargoes, many shipowners are inclined to tie up their vessels. Two 10,000 tonners and two 8,000 tonners have been arranged to be relegated since the recent tonnage distribution report.
