The rebel forces, who are under the leadership of Admiral Chan Chak (now reported to be in Hong Kong) have two Chinese gun- bosta in their possession.

Although hostilities are threaten- ed, every effort is being inade secure a peaceful settlement. The |Commander-in-Chief, General Chan, realising that popular sentiment de- mands the preservation of peace at: all costs at the present time, when the whole country is facing a crisis, hus offered sums ranging from $20,000 for each of the commanders if they return to Canton with their vessels. If this fails, it is likely that force will be resorted to.

COULD NOT STOP.

Ship's Wild Plange Through Atlantic Seas.

"New York, March 9. Plunging in the heavy Atlantic seus is a ship that cannot stop, the American collier H. F. de Bar- deleben,, which for nearly two days 7th June has been steaming completely out

of control.

5th June

8th June

A rescue Vessel is following in order to take off the 34 men on board the collier as

SOD as the boats can be safely lowered.

The H. F. de Bardeleben's rudder has been smashed, but the crew dare not heave to, lest the giant waves sink the ship. The collier therefore continues on her headlong course, which she has pursued since the White Star liner Adriatic first sighted her near Nantucket Shoal, off the Massachusetts coast, yester- 7th June day.
