Snowy Locks Are Chic

Worn with Grecian Gowns in Well-Dressed Places

By Joanna Slade

Smart, Sophisticated Madam Thirty-Five has discovered the charm of white hair, and some of the most attractive heads in London are crowned with snowy locks. Nowadays Society women go white "in a single night," like the people described in Byron's poem-"The Prisoner of Chillon."

But not

women in London Society owe half their beauty to their snowy locks.

When I had the honour of meet- ing the Princess Louise, Duchess of Argyll, at a lunch party, I was struck with the beauty of her white hair, and the Dowager Countess of Airlie's snowy locks look most at- ¡tractivé under the picturesque Gainsborough hats which suit her so well.

The Greek influence is making itself felt in evening clothes al- ready, and I was not surprised when a Society woman told me that she

The terra cotta statuettes and vases which are so splendidly repre- sented there, are a valuable inspira- tion.

The cowl neck which seems to us quite modern is really adapted from the Greek chiton, which was caught up on the shoulders with Abula brooches, and drap ed itself in folds on the breast.

These brooches, by the by, were quite dangerous weapons, and came in handy for stabbing your enemies. Society women are sponsoring the Greek cult with fervour, and it seems most appropriate that the Greek line should appeal to A generation which makes a fetish of physical fitness.

An Evening Wrap.

I have seen several versions of an interesting evening wrap ob viously inspired by the Greek Himatia, a toga-like garment which was the ordinary out-door garb for Greek ladies. Made in the fortn of a sleeveless coat, one end of the cape scarf drapery is flung over the shoulder in classic folds.

In some cases the lower section of the coat part is swathed round the figure, caught up at the back under the scarf drapery, or left to hang in uneven ends.

This lovely type of wrap shows bow the best features in Greek dress can be adapted to modern clothes. The lovely dresses worn by some of the nymphs on Greek friezes are being copied by Society girls.

The folds on the shoulder should be fastened with a brooch, and the waist can be girdled with gold to match.

Fashionable Yellow. Yellow Saffron, as the Greeks called it-which was a favourite shade with Roman and Greek ladies, is now extremely fashionable, and if you Intoud to sponsor the Greek mode in the evening. I should advise you to choose yellow or white for your dress,

The close-curled' coiffure which I have illustrated in my sketch looks well with Greek dress, though, of course, Greek women wore their hair long, and bound up with a golden fillet at the back."

This coiffure by a famous head of Apollo, is equally correct with modern nats which show half the head, so that It is practical as well as up-to-date.
