Another satisfactory year's working of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels, Ltd.,. was reported by Mr. J. H. Taggart, at the ordinary yearly meeting of the Company, which was held on March 18.

The Chairman announced, that the Company had re- fused an offer of six and a half million dollars for their Shanghai properties. This fact was favourably commented upon by the Hon. Sir Henry Pollock, K.C., and by Chev. J. M. Alves who said that he was optimistic as to the future prosperity of Shanghai. The meeting is fully reported in the

A net profit of $1,040,823.17 for the year 1931 was re- ported by Sir Shou-son Chow at the thirteenth ordinary annual meeting of the Bank of East Asia, which was held on March 19, at 10, Des Voeux Road Central. This amount was stated to be somewhat less favourable than the profit for the previous year, but it was nevertheless adequate to enable the same dividend and usual bonus to be maintained. A report of the meeting is given in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.

"I am glad that Hong Kong has succeeded in erecting one of these in memory of those who gave their lives for their friends and their country," said His Excellency the Governor in the course of his speech at the opening of the new War Memorial Nursing Home on Mount Kellett, on March 16.

Lady Peel unlocked the door with a gold key, which was presented to her as a memento of the event by the Hon. Mr. W. H. Bell, Chairman of the Committee. The occasion is chronicled in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.

At the Hong Kong Rotary Club luncheon on March 22, Mr. C. Champkin, delivered a highly entertaining address on Anti-Aircraft Guns.

He made splendid use of the opportunity afforded for recruiting members for the new unit of the Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Corps the Anti-Aircraft Light Auto- matic Company.
