As measured at the Statistical Branch of the Imports and Ex- porta Department wholesale prices in Hong Kong during the year 1981 showed an increase of 29.8 per cent. as compared with the year 1924, 36.0 per cent, as compared with the base period of 1922, and an average index figure alightly more than double that of the year 1918.

The average for all articles rose from 189.8 in the first quar- ter of 1981 to 140.4 in the second quarter, declining to 183.2 and 132.7 respectively in the third and last quarters of the year.

The following table shows the course of price changes since 1918:-
