INDIA MAY COMPETE

IN DAVIS CUP.

Best Side on View in Recent Years.

CALCUTTA'S AMBITION.

There la, I am glad to hear, every likelihood that India will participate in the next Davis Cup competition, says a Calcutta cor respondent of The Times of Cey-

lon.

T. S. Charanjiwa' and Madan Mohan will be in England the whole of 1982, and will be avail- able. M. Sleem is still a power in the tennis world, and must be chosen to represent India. He is leaving for Europe shortly and hopes, I understand, to play a lot of tennis again. Then L. Brooke Edwards and W. S. Michelmore, will be in Europe after the All- India Championships at Allahabad. They are without doubt the best doubles combination in India at present, and even if Michelmore is not thought good enough to play for this country in the Davis Cup, the opportunity is not likely to be lost af making use of Brooke Edwards' services, perhaps In

with partnership

Charanjiwa, there will be no lack of first class players.

On the contrary India will have a stronger side than has repre- sented her in recent years, so that one can well hope that this coun try will not disgrace herself be fore she is knocked out of the Davis Cup.

There was a time, not so very long ago

In the days of Sleem, Jagat, Lal Deene, and Jacob when India was a leading gure in the world of tennis and there is no reason why that time should not come again.

It is the duty of the A.IL.TȚA. to do its best to encourage the younger players by giving them the opportunity of playing against players of class, but up to now this duty has been taken up by the Calcutta South Club, who are now negotiating, or are likely to be do- ing so in the near future, for a visit from American and French teams together next cold weather. This may sound like too bold a project, but a rich. Bengali syn- dicate has offered the South Club a guarantee of Rs.40,000 for them to get a combined French and American team here, and I under- stand that no time will be lost in making endeavours to arrange such a visit. The South Club, has,
