Latest reports from India confirm those received earlier, and in- dicate that the Extremist movement is much less active than might have|tion, which, however, he has refused been expected. There is general absence of trouble in rural areas, except in the North-West Frontier Province, and, even there the "red shirt" movement seems to be thoroughly shaken. In Bombay and Ahmedabad, the two centres of picketing, support behind Congress seems to be faltering. In the United Provinces, the centre of the no- rent campaign the situation is settling down, rents and revenues are steadily coming in, and 'country life is resuming its normal course.
The above is the substance of what Sir Samuel Hoare, in a broadcast talk to-night, said represents the present state of affairs in India, almost in the actual words of the reports he was receiving. He expressed satisfaction that Lord Irwin, ex-Viceroy, agreed with the present Viceroy. Lord Willingdon, that it is essential for Govern- ment to push on the work of the Conference. It is no less vital, added Sir Samuel, for Government to safeguard the forces of law and order. He believed there would be general agreement that the severe measure they were forced to impose in the face of threats to civilised Government had been carried out with commonsense, moderation and impartiality. Lord Irwin's speech, Sir Samuel Hoare remarked, completely disposed of the charge that there been a sud- den reversal of Government's policy. If further evidence was needed it was to be found in the departure for India of distinguished public men who, within a few weeks, would be continuing the work of the Indian Round Table Conference on the lines that Indians on the Conferences had desired, and they would have as their colleagues some of the most representative Indian public men.
Government would not be deflected from its course by evil forebodings or mischievous threats. Government's policy was simple, straight forward and sympathetic—a policy of progress, combined with firmness.—British Wireless Service.

The appearance of the Nation- al Socialist leader, Adolph Hitler, in the central court to-day in the role of defendant in a libel suit brought against him by Captain Stennes, the former Chief of the Berlin National Socialist storm- troops, ended in an anti-climax. Herr Hitler disclaimed all re- sponsibility for the article in the Voelkische Beobachter which had denounced Captain Sternes 29 1 traitor and charged him with having been in the pay of the police, after the captain had broken away from the Na- tional Socialist camp, alleging corruption and inefficiency against the leaders of the move ment,
When the hearing was opened, Herr Hitler, without referring to the charges, and thus disappoint ing all those who had anticipated sensational developments, inglat- ed that he could not be held re- sponsible for the incriminating article. The plaintiff and his counsel remonstrated, asserting that Herr Hitler had known of the article. But the court, after hear- ing Herr Hitler's evidence and that of a few other witnesses, de- cided to adjourn the Hearing until Februahy 14.
