Miscellaneous Work

349. New Territories Supply

(a) Ping Chau Island. The sinking of 5 wells 10' × 40′ deep which was started last year was completed. The yield from them was, however, disappointing, being insufficient to cater for the needs of the Island during the dry months. Work was commenced on the sinking of a further 2 wells of similar dimensions.

(b) Un Long Districts.

A mass concrete dam 35 ft. high and 120 ft. long was constructed immediately above the site of the old intake to impound approx. 3 million gallons of water. A new 6" dia. supply main 8,000 ft. long was laid from the dam along the same route as the existing 5" pipeline to the main road. Pressures at Un Long, which is near the end of the supply line, improved from 10 lbs./sq. in. to 60 lbs./sq. in. and the daily consumption increased by an average of 60,000 gallons per day. A water supply was laid to Nam Bin Wai, Un Long old market, the Ping Shan group of three villages and Chung Uk Tsuen.

(c) Cheung Chau. This scheme was described in last year's report. The necessary pipes and pumping units were ordered and the contract drawings and documents for the construction of the dam on Lantau Island were prepared.

(d) Sha Tau Kok, Shatin, Sai Kung, Tai O and Lantau. Detailed schemes and estimated costs were prepared to provide water supplies at the above villages. The necessary pipes etc. were ordered for the Sha Tau Kok, Shatin and Sai Kung proposals.
