Pineapple Pass is due to the continued but decreasing horizontal settlement of the rock fill, which is inherent in rock-filled dams and there is no evidence that the safety of the dam is impaired.
329. 36" Steel Main-Shing Mun. The 48" sluice valve referred to in last year's report was installed in the 36" pipeline and no excessive vibration in the valve tower standpipe has since been noted. An order was placed for a new 36" valve to replace the 48" one installed during the year.
330. Catchwaters.
A number of catchwaters were in need of urgent attention. Repairs to stop leakage through the inverts and dry weather flow channels were carried out at the following: Aberdeen East, Mount Parker Lower, Tytam East, Stanley East, and Shing Mun.
In the event of the Shing Mun catchwater being overloaded, two additional sluice gates were installed to enable heavy flow to be controlled.
331. New Pumping Plant. The need for standby units at the Bowen Road and the Elliot Pumping Stations was explained in last year's report. Orders were placed for a suitable electrically driven pumping unit for each station.
332. The water for Repulse Bay, Shouson Hill, and the Jardines' Lookout areas has to be pumped from Eastern. The consumption of these districts has increased immensely as a result of the development which has taken place in recent years, and as the pumping capacity of the Station had become barely sufficient, a new oil engine-driven unit was ordered.
333. Kowloon Rapid Gravity Filters. The filtration plant for the above scheme was ordered last year. At the end of the year under review, very little of the equipment had been received and it was not possible to commence the erection of the building and the installation of the plant.
