SECRET WORK ON NEW DRASTIC CUTS IN U.S.
CUNARDER.
Close Guard, Over New Liner.
DISPLACEMENT OF 84,000 TONS:
Glasgow, October 6.
Ne hush-hush fighting ship was ever bullt in deeper secrecy than that which surrounds the mammoth Cunard liner now on the stocks at John Brows and Co.'s yard, Clyde-
bank.
Gates are closed against all save officials and workmen, and elaborate precautions are taken to exclude sightseers.
The Cunard management evident ly desires to conceal the features of the new vessel from competitors, both domestic and foreign, who are
understood to have made attempts to penetrate the secrets of her design.
Be that as it may, all Clydesde is intrigued by this mystery ship, about which I am now able to dia-
close new details.
Although she will not be ready to go afloat for another five months, aho already conveys an overpower- ing impression of immensity. From stem to stern this gigantic steel ribbed hull measures nearly 350 yards, and her cubic capacity will be 7,809,000ft.
..
I have good authority for estimating her displacement at 84,000 tons, 20,000 tons heav'er then the Majestic, now the world's largest liner, and more than twice the weight of Hood, our mightiest warship. Everything about this mystery ship is planned on a gargantuan scale. Her three funnela could com- accommodate multiplo fortably streams of road traffic. Her rivets alone account for 4.000 tons, the largest of them weighing 11lb. each Should the machinery be forced it would generate over 210,000 h.p. The ship's ocean speed is expect ed to average over thirty knots from Southampton to New York.
Almost Unsinkable. Although not officially claimed to be unsinkable, the ship is built to remain afloat after receiving dam-
