ENGLAND'S NEW SELECTORS.
Seventeen Names for
Rugby Committee. ·
UNPRECEDENTED ACTION.
England's disappointing showing in the Rugby world inst season led to criticism of the Selection Com mittée, and to the subsequent off- cial intimation of pending changes, says the Daily Mail.
During the close season those most in touch with the Rugby Union have been busily engaged in a search for a committee of selectors possessed not only of Bound judgment but with sufcient leisure to be able to devote almost unlimited hours to trekking from one end of the country to the other, attending sometimes as many as three matches in one week.
An unprecedented action has bcon the outcome of the search. As a preliminary to their task the
with request that their names might go forward for voting pur- poses.
Seven or eight declined, but the Daily Mail understands that those who have expressed their willing- ness to serve, if elected, include: From the South.-J. Daniel, E. W. Roberts, R. Hamilton-Wickes, E. G. Butcher, H. A. Haigh-Smith, H. E. B. Wilkins, H. Coverdale.
From the North.-R. F. Oakes, A. M. Smallwood, H. C. Catchside, E. D. Prentice, J. A. Schofield.
Oakes, Daniell, and Roberts have had selection experience. All the northern nominations are former internationals, although J. A. Scho- fold the Cambridge University Blue and Lancashire County player, appeared only once for England- against Wales in 1911.
In addition to this list of in- teresting personalities it is under- stood that the members of the existing selection committee have put forward the names of Messrs. J. Baxter, G. C. Robinson, Vice- Admiral Percy Royda, Adrian Stoop, and A. T. Voyce.
Robinson (Northumberland) was

The ball struck his jaw with great force, but it is not balfoved to be broken. Hurlingham were leading until the accident, which occurred in the last chukker. They eventually lost 8-10.
PIRIE WINS GRAND PRIX.
Leaves Hospital Day Before Race.
COLLAPSES AT FINISH,
In retaining the Manx Grand Prix Junior race, D. J. Pirlo (Velocette), a London architect, ac complished a romarkable per formance.
He only came out of hospital the day before the race, after treat ment for injuries received in prac tice, and spent part of the night tuning his machine.
Yet he won by nearly five minutes, set up a new lap record of - 71.20 m.p.h., and covered the whole distance at an average of 69.59
m.p.h., which is not only a Junior record, but beats the Senior by one tenth of a mile.
Small wonder he collapsed at the finish and had to be lifted from his machine and carried to the am- bulance tent, but he quickly re- covered.
of experience and high goal play have made him one of polo's greatest shot makers and capable of bringing off shots at close quar, tors that even the best of stars would not even attempt.
A Born Leader.
His electric aggressiveness has made him a born leader. On the ground clad in muft! he is the quiet individual you would find him were you to walk into his office in Buenos Aires: but on a horse he is charged with the hell for loather driving force that every first class player must have. Sometimes when playing back he has been ac cused of being too aggressive and
that he attacked too much leaving the defence too open.
That was said of him in 1924 when he played. for England against the
United States but if Lacey had not played as he did, England would never huve got as far as she did.
Played For England.
Lacey has a unique distinction in that he is the only player in the If polo players were grouped as world who had played tournament are boxers according to size Lewis play. In 1924 and. 1030 he played Lacey would be the lightweight for England against the United champion of the world. Lacey who States in quest of the Westchester is now leader of the Argentine Cup. The fact that he was born Hurlingham, four challengers for in Canada although he has lived in the open polo championship of the the Argentine ever since he was United States is one of the smallest two or three years old, making him and the lightest players in the technically eligible to play for Eng. world.
