256. The old road surface of sand carpet and macadam, which had very little foundation, had failed in many places and it was replaced with a 9" vibrated cement concrete slab.
A one-way traffic system was introduced and reconstruction was carried out for the full length, a half width at a time, in order to give the Utility Companies and Departments maximum opportunity for inspection and renewal of their services.
257. A further section of Wongneichong Road, from Queen's Road East to the entrance of the Colonial Cemetery, was reconstructed between November and March.
258. This section of road is flanked on the East by the H.K. Jockey Club and on the West by three cemeteries. Formerly there was a footpath on the East side of the road only, and the carriageway, being of irregular width, formed bottlenecks which were aggravated by the tram track along the western side. The old tarmacadam road surface had been patched repeatedly during recent years but had deteriorated so badly under the stress of present day traffic that further expenditure on it would have been uneconomical. In order to obtain the required realignment and sufficient width to provide a second footpath, it was necessary to resume a strip of land from the Colonial Cemetery.
259. The length of the section reconstructed was 1,100 feet and it was provided with a 35'0" wide carriageway (widened to 40'0" on the bend) together with two concrete footpaths each 6'6" wide. The tramway track was re-aligned to run in the centre of the road. A portion of the road surface alongside the East kerb was finished in concrete to provide a car park 7'6" wide and 470 feet long and the old brick and concrete walling of the Colonial Cemetery which had been demolished was reconstructed in its new position with squared random granite masonry.
260. The Lai Chi Kok Beach Road was also reconstructed and a 10'0" wide footpath was provided on the seaward side with hand rails along the seawall. The carriageway was constructed of 9" vibrated concrete 24'0" wide and a second footpath was provided.
