In recommending a dividend in- crease perhaps greater than the ex- pansion in profits might have just- fed, the directors were influenced, no doubt, by the consideration that It was better that surplus carnings should be distributed among share- holders, thereby raising their pur- chasing power and assisting trade, than that they should be retained Such a in the company's coffers. course was rendered practicable by the strong financial position of the undertaking, which within the past year has increased its cash resources from £77,830 to £90,480 and which includes among its large liquid assets upwards of £100,000 of British Government securities.

A WHOLE WEEK'S NEWSPAPERS IN ONE..
A splendid "China Exhibition," which aroused great interest with the English and Chinese public of Hong Kong, was held in the City Hall, on November 5, 6 and 7. The official opening ceremony was performed by His Excellency the Governor and Sir Shou-son Chow, In the presence of a large gathering. Many priceless works of art, curios, and tapestries were exhibited, and the exhibition, taken all round, was a most absorbing display. Lectures on China's art and paintings were given, whilst tableaux representing interesting phases in the Chinese life, were also presented. A full report of the function is chronicled in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.

In the Central Police Court on November 7, the First Magistrale (Mr. Schofield) delivered his judgment in the case in which Mrs. I. Gladstone summoned her husband, Mr. A. F. Gludstone, for maintenance, and for the legal custody of the two children. The Magistrate found in favour of the defendant, and dismissed the summons accordingly. The OVERLAND CHINA MAIL gives the judgment in full.

Though good sport was witnessed at Happy Valley on November 7, the eleventh extra race meeting was marred by a mild sensation in that Bright Star, the winner of the main event of the day, the Hong Kong St, Lozer, was dis- qualified, and the race awarded to Gold Key. Close finishes were the order of the day, and dividends were not on the big side. A detailed report is furnished in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.
November 11, on the thirteenth anniversary of Armis- tice Day, the Colony's observance of the Two Minutes Silence in memory of those who fell in the Great War, and the laying of wreaths at the Cenotaph, were again observed with all due solemnity. The scene at the Cenotaph, where H.E. the Governor took the salute, was most Impressive and touching. A full account is contained in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.
After functioning for ten years, the Ex-Active Service Men's Association terminated its existence in Hong Kong at the tenth annual general meeting which was held in David House on November 6, those present passing resolutions by which the E. A. S. M. A. amalgamates with the local branch of the British Legion. A report is published in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.
With regard to the stranding of the Japanese 8.8. Ryujin Maru on the Tan Rocks, in the Haitan Straits, wireless messages received on November 4, from H.M.S. Hermes state that the weather was getting worse; wind had increased during the day from 23 to 31 m.p.h.; and there was no prospect of boat work being possible to-morrow (Lc. November 5,) unless the sea subsided a great deal during the night which was unlikely. The OVERLAND CHINA MAIL chroniclés a detailed account of the episode.
