Bandits Surprised.
The appearance of a steam vessel en the river filed bandits" and peasants with surprise, but as she showed the barrels of two machine guns, no one dared even attempt to hail her. The mysterious vessel kept steadily on her course and took no notice of the armed bandits on the bunks of the river. Making her way carefully up the Gang-he, some of her crew landed and made a journey into the interior of the country, but for what purpose, no- body seems to know. After spend- ing several days, apparently ploring, the party returned to the steamer and made all haste back to Te.leikar, and thence proceeded to Harbin.

object of the trip was kept secret, the Chinese skipper of the steam vessel having no idea why he was ordered to go up into unknown dis tricts. Some Chinese state that the "machine guna" were only stove piping made to represent guns, but in any case they kept the bandits at bay and a similar trick might be adopted by junk owners. It is conjectured by some people that the foreigner was a mining en- gineer searching for gold or caal, place but whoever he was, he has secured people information on an unexplored dis- chance of working any, business trict and may have found some rich far from the chief towns of Man- deposita for which concession churla.
