The construction of all-metal bodies on vehicle chassis designed to suit the particular requirements of various Government departments continued, but owing to the large amount of maintenance and repair work to be done the majority of the new body-building work was carried out by local contractors.
206. Construction of special bodies during the year included seven Ambulances with a new design of stretcher gear for ready conversion to take sitting cases, five 15-cwt. Pick-Up trucks, four Insulated Meat Delivery Vans, two Police Mobile Canteens, a Light Cemetery Van, one "Black Maria" and eleven Police Patrol Wagons. Designs were also prepared and contracts let for the construction of a further ten Insulated Meat Delivery Vans, a Heavy Cemetery Van, a Light Clothing Van, a mobile Police Command Post, two Police Personnel Carriers and a Light Ambulance.
207. A small amount of new equipment was manufactured for other Departments. This included remote control search-lights for the Police border posts, a mail conveyor belt and mail cages for the Post Office, and a special wheel chair for polio cases for the Medical Department.
208. A new type of Conservancy Collector was designed with a view to improving the method of nightsoil collection in the Colony, and preliminary tests were carried out on a prototype obtained from the U.K. Information gained from these tests enabled a number of modifications to be made, and it is hoped to put the vehicle into service at an early date to obtain operating experience and to assess the suitability of the scheme in general. The results of the preliminary tests were encouraging, and it is anticipated that the introduction of this new type of vehicle will substantially alleviate many of the present objectionable aspects of nightsoil collection.
209. A total of 34,106 jobs were completed during the year.
210. 103 applicants for posts as motor drivers were tested and 71 who passed the test were engaged.
211. 644 Government vehicles were involved in accidents.
