98. New Workshops for Electrical & Mechanical Sub-department. This scheme consists of three sections, workshops for the maintenance of Government vehicles and mechanical equipment, workshops and stores for the maintenance of electrical equipment, offices and staff canteen.
99. The first section to be built is the vehicle and mechanical equipment workshops. The building was designed in reinforced concrete as there was a shortage of structural steel at that time. Maximum column spacing was achieved by placing the columns 27' 0" back from the face of the building, leaving a clear centre space of 78' 0" with 27' 0" cantilevers on either side. The bottom of the columns will be hinged to allow for expansion of the concrete roof, and to ensure that no settlement takes place it was decided to pile the foundations. Piling was completed in March. The working drawings for the building were also completed.
100. The main building is 260 ft. long × 132 ft. wide and will house the vehicle repair bays, lubrication bays, fitters shop, body-building, engine-testing and machine shop.
101. An adjoining building 130 ft. long × 40 ft. wide will house the workshops for the repair of heavy mechanical equipment, and will be equipped with an overhead travelling gantry.
