PREFACE

1. This report, which covers the activities of the Public Works Department for the financial year ended 31st March, 1954, describes briefly the work carried out by the various sub-departments and outlines some of the schemes to be undertaken in the near future.

2. Major works which were completed during the year include the first section of the new Government Offices (para. 20 et seq.), the Causeway Bay Reclamation scheme and the new Typhoon Shelter (paras. 222 - 225), Aberdeen School (para. 49), new Peak School (para. 50), a new road providing access to the Radio-Sonde Station at King's Park (para. 273) and the construction of the new Tai Wai Bridge (paras. 281 - 284).

3. Major works in progress include the New Police Headquarters at Arsenal Yard (para. 36), Kowloon Secondary School (para. 58), the Central Reclamation Scheme (para. 226 et seq.), Sookunpoo Sports Stadium (para. 230 et seq.), the new pier at Ping Chau (para. 234), and the main dam of the Tai Lam Chung Water Supply Scheme (para. 342 et seq.).

4. Paragraphs 181, 186, 190 and 192 give some indication of the amount of new and reconstruction work carried out by the Drainage Office.

5. Major reconstruction work was carried out on sections of the following roads:- Queen's Road Central (para. 255), Wongneichong Road (para. 257, 258), Laichikok Beach Road (para. 260), Ma Tau Wei Road (para. 261), Island Road (para. 264-267), and Castle Peak Road at Un Long (para. 268 et seq.).
