the spectacle arranged for by David MacBrayne (1938) Ltd., the modern title of the long-established and, renowned "MacBrayne's" Clyde and West Highland passenger fleet, At one of the berths of the Broomiek, and moored close to gether for facility of external and internal inspection.", were. two vessels of the Company's fleet, each in its own way of arresting, if not unique, interest. One was the new twin-screw vessel Loch Fyne, en bodying in her passenger accom- modation and her propulsive mo chinery especially the acme of up- to-dateness; and the other the ps. Glencoe, a veteran of 85 years and probably the oldest steamboat

in the world still in active service. In close juxtaposition the two vessels forcibly brought home to the many visitors the great gap between the advanced shipbuilding practice of today, as regards passenger accom- 'modation, propulsion, and navigasi tion, and the ship construction and marine engineering of over 80 years ago..

Built in 1846 by the long- defunct firm of Tod and Macgregor, Partick, the Glencoe is propelled by a vertical, direct-acting "steeple" engine of 120 h.p. At first named the Mary Jane, she ploughed Clyde, waters between Glasgow and In- verary for many a ling day, and for the major part of her lifetime Oban and Western Isles. The Loch Fyne, launched se recently as March 20, by William Denny and Bros. Dumbarton, has twin-screw propulsive machinery consisting of two, sets of Davey-Paxman single- acting, four-cycle, trunk-piston, airless injection, five-cylinder,
