GOVERNMENT'S PROBLEM.

When Shall Britain Cease Disarming?

THE CHINA MAIL.

"I can speak for the whole of the Government when I say that if we can see a real advance by other nations on the lines, we

been have

in going along Britain we are prepared to go

farther. One of the great dif- ficulties has been to decide the point at which we shall say, 'So far and no farther."

This statement was made by Mr. A. V. Alexander, First Lord of the Admiralty, speaking o011 the subject of disarmament at the 116th anniversary luncheon of the Peace Society at the House ef Commons. He remarked:-

We stand for the cause of peace and disarmament, but we do not want Britain to make a false step, and instead of lead- ing to what we want-a general peace ideal and world dis- armament only to precipitate more trouble in the world."

more

It was rather disturbing, he proceeded to find that after there had been founded the constitu- tion of the League of Nations and the Kellogg Pact there' should be so many nations which had so little faith in the written and the signed document that they must keep up not only a slceleton deferice force, but also an expanding development for

war.

"I am an enthusiast for peace, and I want to see disarmament," Mr. Alexander said, "but time and again I find that nation3 whose names I will not mention have not produced the works of faith they ought to have pr duced,"

THESE CIRCULATIONS.

Many things in America are big- ger than their counterparts in Bri- tain. This applies to rivera, moun- tains, cinemas. ahops, buildings, But it does not apply to newspaper sports' meetings and newspapers.

circulations. In spite of its com-

paratively small population, Great

Britain has at least three dailies with a net circulation of more than a million and, a quarter. And the recent report of the National Federation of Retail Agents, Book. sellers and Stationers shows that the sales of British papers are ad- vancing rather than receding.

FOUR-YEAR TEST OF AUSTRALIAN ✨APPLES.

Best Imported Variety.

It is understood that a report concerning the quality, packing, and distribution of Australian apples, which has just been com pleted by the Empire Marketing Board, claims that the fruit is superior, in all respects to that imported from any foreign coun-

try.

For four years exhaustive scientific tests have been made as to the condition of the fruit at the Cambridge Low Temperature Research Station, and a careful watch has been kept on consign- ments which have reached Britain.
