266. Irrigation, N.T. Colonial Welfare and Development Funds are to be used on improvements to existing irrigation systems and also to provide new irrigation schemes in the New Territories. An Irrigation Engineer was accordingly appointed during the previous year to work under the direction of the District Commissioner, N.T., and prepare a report on possible schemes in the N.T. A large number of streams were gauged to determine the dry weather flow and a report prepared by the Irrigation Engineer was studied and amended before it was submitted to the Secretary of State for the Colonies.

267. Resettlement Areas. Water supplies were laid to a number of areas and existing supplies were improved and extended. The most important work carried out was at:

(a) Ngau Tau Kok (Area B):— where an intake with roughing filters and attendant's quarters were constructed on the upper reaches of the River Jordan. From this a 3" diameter supply pipe approx. 7,000 ft. long was laid to Fuk Wa Village.

(b) King's Park & Homantin (Areas A, E, J, & Q):— These areas are very heavily populated and, as a supply could not be given from the existing distribution system without causing inconvenience to normal consumers, a new 6" dia. pipe was laid drawing water direct from the Yaumati Service Reservoir. A network of sub-mains and 55 stand-pipes were then installed to feed the areas.

268. Supplies in the New Territories. Schemes were considered to improve existing supplies and to provide new ones to supply new development and increasing population.
