240. The permanent repair to the catchwater was done by contract and was completed by the middle of March.

241. Shing Mun Catchwater Sluice Gates. To minimize a repetition of the catastrophe at Tsun Wan, in the event of further overloading of the catchwater it was decided to instal sluice gates at suitable points. Three sluice gates were fabricated and one was installed by the end of the year.

242. Bowen Road Service Reservoir. This scheme was fully described in last year's report. The new reservoir was satisfactorily completed at a cost of $1,665,000.

243. Since the trunk supply main, in addition to supplying the reservoir, also provides the drive water for the ram pumps, it was considered that a standby pump independent of this source of power is essential. A suitable electrically driven pump was ordered.

244. Tytam Tuk Pumping Station Conversion. The final stage of the conversion of the units in this station from steam to diesel and electric drive was completed. The 2 remaining steam engines, pumps, boilers, and a large quantity of cast iron and steel scrap from the delivery and the suction mains of the pumps were sold. The 2 new diesel driven sets to replace the steam sets were installed and connected to the new suction and delivery mains. The electrically driven pump installed during the previous year functioned satisfactorily, but minor failures occurred in the cylinder heads of the diesel engines and in the pump bearings. Repairs were carried out by the pumping station staff, and no further trouble was experienced.

245. Elliot Pumping Station. To avoid confusion between this station and the one at Pokfulum Reservoir, its name was changed from Pokfulum Road to Elliot Pumping Station. It is situated near the University.

246. Reference was made in last year's report to a new casing ordered for the Peak high lift pump. The casing was received in May and was immediately assembled and tested. It proved satisfactory, and no further trouble was experienced.
