225. Of the samples taken at service reservoirs one showed B. Coli in 25 c.c. and 3 showed it present in 100 c.c. All the other samples were of the required standard. The overall percentage was 99% of samples showing absence of B. Coli in 100 c.c.
226. 97% of the samples taken from the consumers' taps were of the required standard, namely Coliform organism absent in 100 c.c. Every unsatisfactory sample was traced to a defect in the consumer's inside services, principally to contamination in storage cisterns.
227. Pumping. The distribution of 11,601 million gallons of water necessitated the pumping of 2,293 million gallons of raw water and 2,457 million gallons of filtered water, making a total of 4,750 million gallons pumped. This figure represents an increase of 19.6% on the quantity pumped the previous year. The changeover of the pumping units from steam to diesel and electric drive continued.
228. Waste Detection. The lack of adequately trained staff and the continued necessity for restricted hours of supply again limited effective waste detection. The rectification of visible defects both in public mains and in consumers' systems was, however, continued and satisfactory progress was made in bringing record plans up to date. Three areas on the Island were examined in detail but due to the time required to locate and repair leaks, comparative figures showing the reduction in minimum night flow could not be obtained.
229. Metered Services. A total of 1,734 additional metered services were installed during the year bringing the total to 36,990 of which 19,525 were on the Island and 17,465 on the Mainland.
Workshops.
230. The new workshop at Bullock Lane which was completed during the previous year proved a vast improvement over the improvised one which had been used since the re-occupation in 1945. The new machinery installed enabled work
