BLOWN INTO THE SEA.

Explosion And Fire In Motor-Boat.

Sir Donald Makgill, Bt, and an- other man were blown into the sea at Newhaven by an explosion of petrol on the motor-yacht Jackens, which was being re-fuelled from a petrol store tank on the shore..

When the feed pipe was removed to see if the tank was full, some splashes fell on to a stove.

Immediately there was an explo sion and the two men were flung overboard, the vessel bursting into flames.

The

salvage tug.. Richmere, hurried to the spot and rescued the men apparently uninjured.

The tug then took the burning to the harbour, where the flames were put out. The boat was damaged severely,

SHIPS FOR RUSSIA.

Credits Difficulty

Again.

Mr. Y. Zoff, Deputy Commissar for Marino and River Transport of the U.S.S.R., who is the head of a special commission, at present visiting Britain for the purpose of. acquiring ships, has made the dol. lowing statement:-

"My commission came over to Britain in pursuance of our work for the development of the merçan- tile maxine and river fleet of the U.S.S.R. Its aim is to supplement our existing fleet by a certain num- ber of ships to be acquired abroad. British-built ships are considered very highly in the Soviet Union in view of their universally recognised reliability. I understood from au: thoritative statements in the Press made about a month ago that Bri- tish shipping quarters prefer to dispose of part of the idle tonnage; which for years had a depressing effect upon freight rates, to orders being placed for new shipa..

"In view of this preference I directed our experts to devote at- tention to the study of the tonnage at present laid up and available for purchase. Visits have been made to Newcastle, Sunderland; Liverpool, and Cardiff, and this work of in- vestigation is still in progress. I notice now, however, that attempts are being made to handicap the negotiations for the purchase of laid-up shipping also. The argu- ments advanced are difficult to ra concile with common sense. for instance, is the use to Britain of keeping this surplus tonnage laid up? It is not easy to understand how this should mitigate unemploy- ment. Or why. this particular dis- crimination against the application: of credits where ships are concern- ed? Ships have been sold on a credit basis bafore, and it is quite a usual transaction."

What

Mr. Zoff concludes: "I hope that when we come to negotiation it will be possible to reach positive results mutually advantageous to both sides. I hope also that we shall be able to come to arrangements for placing orders for a considerable number of new ships."
