One of the hardy annuals in the realm of commerce in the Orient is the subject of Trade Commissioners. In every centre of importance the utility-nay, the absolute necessity-of Trade Commissioners has been em- phasised in the Press to the point _almost_of_wearied reiteration. Local enthusiasm in the topic speedily dissipates, however, be- cause of the sheer indifference of the British and Australian Governments in particular. Many years ago there was, it is true, an Australian Trade Com- missioner, with headquarters, if we remember aright, in Singa pore, but the need for retrench-
