(g) the demolition of the two existing piers and the completion of the reclamation by dumped and hydraulic fill.

During the year, items (a) and (c) were completed and (b) commenced.

153. Pier at Tai Lam Chung. With the commencement of construction of the new reservoir for the Tai Lam Chung Valley water supply scheme in the New Territories, it was necessary to build a pier to facilitate the handling of materials and stores. A suitable site was selected near the 16th milepost on the Castle Peak Road and approximately 2 miles from the site of the reservoir. The pier is of reinforced concrete 130 ft. long × 30 ft. wide connected to the shore by a causeway of pitched rubble 140 ft. long and 27 ft. wide. On account of the inaccessibility of the site and the distance from the main source of materials the pier was constructed as far as possible with precast concrete members. The 14″ × 14″ piles, the beams, wallings, landing steps and bottom half thickness of the deck slab were cast at the Port Works Depot and site construction and form work were reduced to an absolute minimum. The work, carried out under contract, was completed in under 4 months.

154. North Point Reclamation. The contract concluded during the year completed the reclamation at North Point. The work under this contract was the construction of the last length of 1,150 ft. of seawall in the total length of 3,375 ft. This reclamation has added an area of some 1,400,000 sq. ft. of valuable land for godown and small factory sites, averaging in depth 450 ft. from the seawall to King's Road, to which the seawall is approximately parallel. All fill material for the reclamation was obtained free of cost by public dumping.

155. Works Depot & Laboratory. On a portion of the newly completed reclamation at North Point a new works depot and laboratory were constructed. With a total area of 54,000 sq. ft. the layout is designed for the rapid precasting of all concrete units, mainly blocks, piles and pier members with later on an extension for a prestressing bed.
