FERRIER'S
SON OF THE SHANGHAI CHAMPION.
MAGNIFICENT GOLF.
A Bobby Jones at Sixteen.
Sydney, June 27.. Amidst scenes of intense exclte- ment, Jim Ferrier, the 16-year-old son of. B. Ferrier a. former golf champion of Shanghai, and now. secretary of the Manly Course, yesterday defeated E. L. Apperly, five times New South Wales golf champion, for the State amateur title.
The match was in the 'balance to the last green of the Rose Bay. course. Ferrier was dormie three. He lost the 34th and 35th, and halved the last hole.
The Sun describing the match saya:
In the morning the golf was per- fect for Ferrier required a 8 and 4 for a 70, while Apperly required Each the same figures for a 72. was out in 84 and square at the turn. Ferrier became one up st the 12th with a 4 and then they halved the next two in 6 and 3, though Apperly was unlucky in not getting the 2 at the 14th for "the ball, through rimming the hole, just stayed on the edge.
Then came a superb piece of work by Ferrier at the 15th. He was to the left of the green with a bank between ball and hole. He had to decide between a pitch with stop or to use the bank, the latter being a dificult shot to judge. He chose the latter and a perfect effort It was.
Left with a fairly easy putt Ap perly's ball went in and out and stymied Ferrler. It poked an im- possible shot, but Ferrier holed it, the ball seeming to curve in, hit Apperly's and then vanish in the tin
It merited the sustained applause,“ Strange to say. Apperly had slight- ly the best of the driving as to length for he out-drove Farrier at the 4th, 8th, Oth, 15th and 17th, the Ferrier remainder being equal, was alightly better on the greens, Apperly failing twice."
In the afternoon Ferrier appear- ed slightly restive at the start, but hit a beauty to the green, Apperly being on the bank. It looked any odds on Ferrier winning the hole, hut Apperly was down in 8, while Ferrier took 4 to make the match square. Apperly was superb at the
hole.

AIR CO-OPERATION.
Imperial Airways and
India Service.
On receiving news of the inter- ruption and possible breakdown of the plans for the Indian State Alf Service, Imperial Airways have cabled to India, offering the Gov- ernment their assistance and co- operation in any way that might be suggested.
In case there is a serious col- lapse of the State Air Service scheme, It is hoped that the Com- pany will make a more definite offer. It is understood that some little time ago it considerably modified its attitude on the sub- ject of the training of probationer Indian pilots with the result that | there should be less polition) -op-| position to its working of the trans-Indian route if retrenchment leaves room for no indigenous de- velopment.

An official explanation of the sudden setback to the Indian State Air Service is that there must be absolutely ruthless cutting down of all expenditure that is not likely to be productive of re- venue in the near future.
