Typhoon and rainstorm damage.
122. At Tai Wai in the New Territories damage was caused to the river training works, described last year, by the very heavy rainfall which occurred in September. This rainfall unfortunately took place at a time when the Jubilee Reservoir was overflowing. The channel of the river again became silted with new debris from up-stream and with gravel eroded from the banks formed for the river training which had not had enough time to age. A number of paddy fields were damaged by quantities of silt deposited upon them. Removal of the silt and repairs to the embankment were commenced.
123. Rainstorms caused damage to the cutting faces formed during the site formation of the pilot low-cost housing scheme at Sheung Li Uk. Owing to the friable nature of the earth large areas of the cutting faces and the areas above were surfaced either with chunam or turf.
124. Following the bursting of the Waterworks catchwater above Tsun Wan this sub-department excavated large quantities of debris from the course of the river flowing through Tsun Wan Village and used the material for reclamation purposes.
Works executed on private account.
125. During the year over 850 storm-water and foul sewer connexions were made and almost four miles of sewers and storm-water drains were laid under this head. A large part of the sewers and drains were for private building estates, e.g. Jardine's Lookout, Kowloon Tsai and Boundary Street Housing Schemes.
126. 548 accounts totalling $1,678,000.00 were issued for private works.
127. Advice on drainage questions were given to the Buildings Ordinance Office, the Crown Lands Office, Government and private Architects and others in connexion with new and old buildings and land development.
