Maintenance.

72. During the year routine two or four year periodic maintenance work was carried out on 115 Government buildings, as well as annual maintenance on Lighthouses, Beacons, and Waterworks buildings. 148 works of alterations, additions, and improvements were carried out with funds administered by the Buildings (A.A. & I.) Committee, and routine white ant examinations were carried out in 85 buildings.

73. In addition to the above the following works were also carried out under the Maintenance contract: - re-alignment of the frontier fence, fencing of aircraft at Kai Tak, new covered playground at Un Long Primary School, hot water installations to New Territories Police Stations. Modernization of Victoria Mortuary. Additional lavatory accommodation at Lai Chi Kok Hospital. New buildings for coal yard, North Point and partitioning of Stanley Prison Printing Shop.

74. Coronation Decorations. The designs for the official decorations of Government buildings and for the set pieces in Statue Square and the Star Ferry concourse, Kowloon, were approved and working drawings were in hand by the end of the year.

75. Private building activity continued at a high rate. New lots were being developed by the erection of domestic, commercial and industrial buildings and redevelopment was taking place on old lots where old buildings were being demolished to make way for new.

76. Plans submitted for the erection of new blocks of offices, churches and cinemas showed no appreciable reduction whilst those submitted for new schools showed an increase over the previous year.
